Established in 1972 with the founding of the College, the Department of English has been a cornerstone of literary activities and scholarship. Over the decades, the department has evolved to meet the dynamic needs of higher education, gaining new momentum with the introduction of the three-year integrated B.A. English program in June 2007. This significant development was further strengthened in 2015 with the incorporation of the Entire Six Units of English, offering students an expansive and in-depth curriculum.

The department is committed to fostering critical thinking, creativity, and effective communication through a diverse range of literary and theoretical engagements. Our faculty members bring expertise in various domains, including Ecocriticism, Ecomedia, Gender Studies and Translation Studies. By integrating contemporary methodologies with traditional literary analysis, we provide students with a well-rounded and intellectually stimulating academic experience.

Under the aegis of Litswag – The English Association, the Department of English encourages students to explore literature’s intersections with music, pop culture, media, and the environment. We regularly organize workshops, literary festivals, and guest lectures to enrich the academic and creative life of our students.

Graduates from the department pursue diverse career paths, excelling in academia, content creation, public relations, and corporate communication. Our commitment to language proficiency, literary excellence, and analytical skills ensures that students are well-prepared for both higher education and professional challenges in a globalized world.

Konkani

    The Department of Konkani was established in the year 1977. The College Offered Three Units at TYBA Level since 2001-2002 While six units at TYBA level from academic year 2002-2003. So far more than two hundred students graduated in Konkani from our College. The graduates of Konkani employed in different fields. Some proceeded for higher education while some employed as teachers, lecturers, linguists, officers, etc.

    Konkani being the people’s language as well as the official language of the state of Goa, there is adequate potential for teaching, creative writing, translation, mass media as well as in administrative services. Konkani language has the potential for use at the national level in view of translation mission and other cultural organizations which deals with Konkani.

    Dr. Cosma Fernandes is the Head of the Department of Konkani. He is an Associate Professor. He has 23 years of teaching experience. He has to his credit Ph.D in Konkani on Konkani Tiatr – A form of Drama. He is Academic Court Member of Goa University and Executive Board Member of Kala Akademy, Goa. He is the recipient of several Awards. He has published Research Papers, Short Stories, and Poetry. He has acted in Tiatr too. He is also a Folk artist.

    Prof. Satyawan Naik is an Assistant Professor. He has 17 years of teaching experience in the Department. He has published a book on street plays entitled Janjag. He has published research papers, short stories, and Poetry. He has served on All India Radio as a news reader. He also worked in Goan news papers as a staff reporter. Presently he is pursuing Ph.D in Konkani.

    Prof. Gorak Sirsat is as Assitant Professor in the Department. He has teaching experience of 10 years. He has written and published short stories, poetry, research articles, and book reviews. He has presented street plays at state level and recited poetry at National level Prof. Tulsi Bhomkar is a Assitant Professor in the department. She has four years of teaching experience.She has received twice research scholarship on the project ‘Lagna Gitanchem Sankalan’ and ‘Lok Kannyanchem Sankalan’ of Goa Konkani akademi. She has published poems and also worked at Goa Doordarshan in news section.

Economics

The Department of Economics has been a very dynamic one since its inception in 1972. The faculty is committed to undergraduate education in Economics. The faculty and students have taken keen interest and have always strived towards achieving excellence in both curricular and extracurricular activities. The establishment of the Economics Club (formerly called Economics Association) in 2006-07 has been a major initiative towards building the overall personality of our students. There are, at present, eight teachers in the Department. The faculty of the Department of Economics is actively involved in research. The faculties have presented papers at various state, national and international seminars/conferences and have research publications and books to their credit. Two of the faculty have been awarded Ph.D. and three of them have registered for Ph.D..

Sociology

The Department of Sociology was established as a full-fledged department in the year 1981. However, a single paper had been taught since the inception of the college in 1972. The department has five faculty members (three regular, one contract and one lecture basis). We have a total strength of about 250 students. In the year 2016, our college has been recognised as a Research Centre to pursue Ph.D. in the subjects of Sociology. Our department established the Sociology Study Circle in the year 1988. The mission of the study club is to provide up-to-date, useful and marketable knowledge and to expose the students to the world of experience and to imbibe high ethical values among them.

  • To expose the students to the leading sociologists by organising lectures, debates and seminars
  • To relate classroom teaching to the practical realities of society through visits to institutions and organising educational tours.
  • To build self confidence among the students among the students by providing leadership opportunities and a platform to actively participate in inter-class and inter-collegiate activities.

Our study club has a small managing committee of office-bearers to plan, co-ordinate and execute the activities of the club.

Psychology

The department of psychology was established in the year 1973 with 3 papers in Psychology. The department is devoted to training young minds who will work to create knowledge that will help them address real world problems. Accomplishing this mission requires a broad range of perspectives and backgrounds. We strive to cultivate an inclusive community that values diverse questions, viewpoints, approaches and participant samples to foster ingenuity, challenged bias and promote intellectual growth,besides students are trained with professional counselling skills so that they can help the community at large.The department of psychology started its 6 papers in psychology in the year 2011 with an aim of providing a holistic approach in Psychology and develop professional intervention skills.This course will help in achieving admissions for higher courses pertaining to the subject.

Political Science

The Political Science department is among one of the oldest Social Science departments of M.E.S. Vasant College of Arts and Commerce. It was established in the year 1973 under Mr E. Braganza. From the year 1975 Dr. Maria Rodrigues served in the department as a faculty member and retired as the principal of the college in the year 2014.

Mr. Dattaprasad Shirgurkar is an Assistant Professor in the department of Political science since 2014 till date. The department offers various papers at undergraduate level for the students opting for B.A. program. The papers include Major and Minor courses including Introduction to Political Theory and Basic concepts in Political Science for FYBA. The department has been offering papers like Introduction to political reporting as well as Community and Political Participation for SYBA. The courses offered at TYBA level are Western Political Thinkers, International Relations, India’s foreign policy, Public Administration and Indian Administration.

The students actively participate in the curricular, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities conducted by the college and university time to time. This not only inculcates civic sense among them but also make them politically, socially and environmentally conscious.

The department doesn’t only believe in imparting core skills of the subject but also strives to socialise students. The department attempts to make students to realise their rights, duties and responsibilities as a member of civilised society, thereby creating a tolerant society based on democratic values like liberty, equality, justice and harmony.

The department strives at imparting quality education and socializing students so that they serve the society as bureaucrats, civil servants, military officers, journalists, lawyers, politicians, social activists, and diplomats and become the agents of socio-economic change.

To improve the learning experience the department takes students for field trips, study tours and experiential learning programs. It makes student to interact with people in society so as to understand the issues, concerns and challenges of the society they live in. Learning activities beyond the classroom adds to the knowledge, wisdom and skills of the student.

The student’s progression of the department has been satisfying as many students passing out from the department are either in the government service on reputed positions, faculty members in various educational institutions including schools, higher secondary, college and university, journalists, lawyers, Social activists, psephologists and active citizens.

Programme Specific Outcome for - Political Science

Information_Technology

The subject Computer Awareness was introduced in the year 1994 as a compulsory paper(only theory) at first year of B.A./B.Com. and also practical component without any marks weightage. In the year 2000 the paper was renamed as Information Technology(theory only) with 40 hours of compulsory practical component. From the Academic Year 2007-08 the paper continued as Information Technology I at Semester I level and Information Technology II at Semester II level of B. A./B.Com. with 40 hours of compulsory practical component, as the Goa University introduced Semester system to all its undergraduate Courses. From the Academic Year 2017-18, Goa University has introduced Choice Based Credit System and under this system the dept. of IT has introduced the various Courses in the subject of Computer Science. From 2023-24 CCFUP under NEP2020 has been introduced


At present the dept. has two full time faculty, one is regular, the other is on contract basis, one is on Lecture basis and there are also one lab assitant and one lab attendant. The dept. has well established IT Laboratory with 18 computer systems and a server with high speed broad band Fiber Optic connectivity with 200 Mbps speed. The lab facilities are offered to all the students of B.A., B.Com. and also to the Staff members. The department also offers the service of IT Laboratory to conduct various activities such as student registration under GUMS, provide information of staff to Goa University under GUMS, activate and upgrade the laptops given to the students under Cyberage Scheme of Govt. of Goa, carry out project work of final year students and also carry out various academic activities for Staff members.
